Our in-house textile laboratory ensures that clothes are built to last
At JACK & JONES, we pride ourselves on making everyday essentials that can be lived in, worn out, thrown on and hardly ever taken off. So in 2012, we set up The LAB – our very own professional textile laboratory that we use to test new fabrics, developments and designs to make sure all the clothes we make are built to last.
The LAB is good news for your wardrobe, your wallet and even the planet. Why? Because wearing what you already have for longer is one of the most sustainable things you can do. So, we are committed to reducing our impact and yours as part of our A BETTER WORLD promise by assuring the quality and durability of every piece we produce, making sure they are items that will stay on your shelves for years to come.
INSIDE OUR LAB AT JACK & JONES HQ
The LAB is located at the JACK & JONES HQ in Brande, Denmark, and it is home to our comprehensive product testing system. Here, our team of highly skilled specialists put our products through their paces using the best tools in the business from materials testing leader James Heal.
We test the physical properties and parameters of our products like tear strength, button pull, snagging, pilling, bursting, color fastness, changes of surface and seam slippage. We want the process to be thorough, so we test performance not just once but over three, five and 10 washes to measure how well products hold up over time.
WHY WE TEST IN-HOUSE
Having a space like this is rarely seen within the fashion industry, but we’ve found that taking the testing process in-house gives us the chance to get hands-on with our products and materials. We see exactly what happens to a fabric during a test, work out why and move towards finding a solution in cooperation with our manufacturers.
This constant dialogue of testing and feedback helps us all to grow and improve, which is a big part of our Better Manufacturing commitment. We continuously challenge each other to put better, longer lasting products out into the world, raising the standards for ourselves and our partners.
Plus, with new, more sustainable textiles coming onto the market all the time, we can test them in the early stages of the design phase and work out how best to incorporate them into our Better Materials strategy.
EXTENDING OUR LAB PROGRAM TO OUR MANUFACTURERS
Alongside our in-house LAB at our HQ, most of our manufacturers have their own laboratories and we work closely together on testing. We have a program to set a high bar for the standards of these facilities, making sure they are in the same league as a third-party laboratory.
Our JACK & JONES LAB Certificate was developed to make technical testing easier and more accessible for our manufacturing partners. We’ve seen the benefits of getting a closer look at how an item performs, and testing at their own facilities rather than through a third-party gives them the chance to assess every detail before an item leaves the factory.
Setting up The LAB is part of our commitment to work in collaboration with our manufacturers to ensure every garment we put onto the market lives up to our defining quality standards. Together, we’re pushing the industry towards a place where clothes can be kept in the system for longer, reducing the load on our planet and ensuring durability by design.
