It all started with a spiderweb. In 2009 cellulose expert Juha Salmela was researching nanocelluclose and attended a conference where he listened to a presentation of a leading spider researcher. Explaining the similarities between spiderweb’s protein and nanocellulose. So why not spinning wood fibre into textile fiber in a similar way to this natural process?
Based on this idea, after years of research and development, SPINNOVA® has created an entirely new way of creating textile fibre – inspired by nature and spiderwebs. With no harmful chemicals and minimal environmental footprint.
The SPINNOVA® fibre can be made of many raw materials originating from nature: agriculture residues like wheat straw or wood, waste from food industry like potato peels, but even post-consumer textile like your old jeans and leather industry waste.
All these raw materials are turned into a new textile fibre with Spinnova’s patented mechanical process instead of the conventional chemical ones. The mechanical processing is safe and simple, and it uses only little water, generates zero waste and minimal CO2 emissions. SPINNOVA® fibre has only a fraction of the environmental footprint compared to conventional materials. *

What’s more, SPINNOVA® can shape the future of circularity: the SPINNOVA® fibre can be recycled again and again without compromising quality. We imagine A Better World where we would use existing materials and turn old textiles into new cool denimwear, again and again. With the SPINNOVA® fibre we can also craft a pair of jeans, a t-shirt or even a pair of shoes.
In September 2022 JACK&JONES and SPINNOVA® introduce their first pants made with SPINNOVA® material. A pair of pants made with a blend of organic cotton, cotton and wood based SPINNOVA® fibre. Our SPINNOVA® pants are undyed and that may come as a shock but undyed means no dye at all. Therefore, no chemicals were used or water polluted for coloring the pants. We currently work on creating a product range with SPINNOVA® fibre launching in our Spring 2024 collection. Stay tuned – it’s going to be big.
